Rural Sanitation

RURAL SANITATION

Society for Environmental Education and Rural Development, SEED began its environmental education programmes in 1993 with the help of Uttarakhand Seva Nidhi, Almora. We were initially funded by the Education Department of the Indian Government (Ministry of Human Resource Development) and later by Rajeshwar Sushila Dayal Charitable Trust, New Delhi. This was begun with the aim to educate the rural children and women, promote forestation, water conservation, the construction of nurseries, as also to create awareness in the minds of the rural masses regarding sanitation. All these programmes were carried out through the Mahila Mangal Dals of various villages. These little successes only added to their confidence. They then pointed out the major issues bothering them in the personal as well as the village level. They gave primary importance to education, health, water and electricity, and fought very strongly for it. They’ve collectively fought against all social evils and the fundamentalism in society. They have tried to bring about awareness regarding cleanliness in their villages. All their struggles and attempts to create new beginnings have provided them with confidence, and have also become boosting factors to their attempts towards rural sanitation.
Within this rural sanitation programme, maintenance of water resources was started as well awareness was created amongst the masses for the need of proper toilets. SEED donated an amount of Rs.1000 to every family who constructed a toilet. This step on behalf of SEED, 15 years later today, has resulted in awareness amongst the masses regarding sanitation in the Suraikhet region. Almost 90% families of every village have a toilet today. People have become more aware regarding sanitation, and are trying to construct toilets with the least expenditure possible. This initiative of creating an awareness amongst the masses could be accomplished only with the help of the children from Balwadis, Sandhya Kendras and Vyavharik Jnana Manch, as also from the women associated with the Mahila Ekta Parishad.
